Compass Media was founded in 1997 to support place-based community organizations in northern New England. Created by online media producer Jay Collier, Compass Media’s goal was to provide a voice on the Internet for local, mostly-volunteer organizations. Greeted by positive feedback and unexpected growth, pages produced by Compass Mediawere soon viewed over a quarter-million times a year.
Recognizing the need for a more formal structure, Collier founded Nature Compass LLC in Lebanon, New Hampshire, in October, 2001, to continue the work begun four years earlier by Compass Media. A complete rearchitecture of services increased search engine optimization and findability.
As Web publishing became simpler, Collier transitioned groups served at The Compass to easy-to-use services including WordPress, and began to move The Compass to the next level. In August 2010, he established The Compass LLC in Topsham, Maine — with advice from Coastal Enterprises, Inc. — to focus on curation: finding and sharing valuable content (official and community-generated). A new community hub model — bringing a spectrum of knowledge and information about a region into one place — is now in rapid development.
The Compass LLC was created in the model of an L3C (or, a low-profit limited liability corporation). Even though such a designation is not yet available in Maine, the idea was, as Wikipedia notes, to “bridge the gap between non-profit and for-profit investing by providing a structure that facilitates investments in socially beneficial, for-profit ventures.”
