About The Compass

The Compass supports communities of professional practice and lifelong learning. Grounded in 20 years of experience with educational and non-profit organizations, The Compass advances online media for lifelong learning.

The Compass LLC was founded as Compass Media in 1997 by Jay Collier — a media strategist, producer and editor with credits at WGBH, MIT, and Dartmouth — to provide professional communication services to regional organizations. The Compass has since developed and published news, updates, and learning resources for over a dozen non-profits and educational organizations.

In 2010, The Compass added focus on the curation of online resources for learning communities within educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and NGOs.

Collier speaks at regional and national conferences for online media professionals in higher education and advises non-profits on strategic, integrated communications for lifelong learning.

The Compass LLC was created in the model of a low-profit limited liability corporation, intended to “bridge the gap between non-profit and for-profit investing by providing a structure that facilitates investments in socially beneficial, for-profit ventures.”
