About The Compass

The Compass LLC supports communities of professional practice and lifelong learning. Grounded in 20 years of experience with educational and non-profit organizations, The Compass advances online media for whole-person learning.

Compass Media was founded in 1997 by Jay Collier — a media strategist, producer and editor with credits at WGBH, MIT, and Dartmouth — to provide professional communication services to regional organizations. Compass Media has developed and published news, updates, and learning resources for over a dozen non-profits and educational organizations.

In 2010, Collier established The Compass LLC in Topsham, Maine, to sustain Compass Media’s focus on the curation of online resources for learning communities within educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and NGOs.

Collier speaks at regional and national conferences for online media professionals in higher education and advises non-profits on strategic, integrated communications for lifelong learning.

The Compass LLC was created in the model of a low-profit limited liability corporation, intended to “bridge the gap between non-profit and for-profit investing by providing a structure that facilitates investments in socially beneficial, for-profit ventures.”
